NA 250 Karachi: No ballot papers, Voters waiting since morning
National Assembly seat NA 250 is the most interesting constituency of Karachi. A fierce competition was expected between Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI). Television host turned politician Khushbakht Shujaat is contesting on MQM’s ticket and Dr. Arif Alvi is Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) candidate. Enthusiastic voters of Clifton and Defense Housing Authority (DHA) areas started turning up early morning to cast their votes on polling stations. But voting couldn’t be started due to non availability of ballot papers. According to news reports in some other areas of Karachi, voters have also complained non availability of ballot papers and polling station staff.
After few hours of delay, voting started in some polling stations at very snail pace. Angry voters complained about the mismanagement and even said that this is being done on purpose. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) and Imran Khan have strong following in NA-250 that include posh and slums areas of Clifton and Defense Housing Authority (DHA) areas. Analyst says that Khushbakht Shujaat is not a popular candidate as she has not done much for the NA250 constituency. Youth is also expected to vote for Imran Khan’s “Naya Pakistan”. Critics have favored PTI’s candidate Dr. Arif Alvi to bag seat from NA-250, whereas in rest of the Karachi MQM is expected to win most of the seats. Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has extended polling of NA 250 to 8:00pm on receiving several complaints from voters and political parties.
