Geo TV apologizes to Pakistani Armed Forces and its viewers
In midst of recent controversy between Geo Media Group and Pakistan’s premier intelligence afency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI); Geo TV has issued a statement (apology) to clarify its position after the attack on its lead anchor and journalist Hamid Mir on April 19, 2014. The statement says that Geo and Jang Group pride its self in working for Pakistani cause and have utmost respect for its institutions and Armed Forces. It further says that says that Geo and Jang group was only reporting Hamid Mir and his family members’ allegations against ISI and in doing so their coverage went on being excessive, distressful and emotional.
They further admitted that repeatedly airing response of ISPR and photograph of DG ISPR was nevertheless misleading, disproportion and inappropriate for which they apologies Director General. Lt. Gen. Zaheer-ul-Islam, members of his family, the rank and file of the Armed Forces and its viewers. Currently, Geo News, Geo Tez and Geo Entertainment are off-air on most cables networks across Pakistan. Earlier PEMRA’s private members have also issued a confused statement/order to suspend Geo TV licenses.
Another controversy that fuel Anti-Geo campaign was the airing of a controversial Qawwali in Shaista Wahidi’s morning show ‘Utho Jago Pakistan’. The Qawwali was aired in reenactment of hot looking model & actress Veena Malik’s wedding ceremony in Dr. Shaista Wahid’s (aka Shahista Lohdi) morning show. Shaista Wahidi has already apologized in video message for her morning show’s inappropriate use of controversial Qawwali. Veena Malik previous scandal also included a controversial nude photo shoot for FHM India with ISI logo on her arm. By this apology, Jang/Geo TV is hoping to ease out the tension between the media group and Pakistani Armed Forces and carry on its business with renewed vow of high professional and ethical standards.
