Will Asad Umer help secure Imran Khan’s PTI more urban support?
Asad Umer, a well established and respected name in Pakistani corporate sector, surprises many if not shock by joining Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The highly paid CEO of Engro Corporation is not known to many ordinary Pakistanis before his decision to join PTI. His addition in Imran’s party is seen as an opportunity for PTI to secure more urban voters who are getting increasingly wary of old and tested politician’s inclusion in PTI like Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, Sardar Assef Ahmad Ali and Legharis etc. These old faces have devious political past with endless list of corruption and abuse of power. Most of these politicians started joining Imran Khan’s Tsunami when they saw Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf gaining momentum in successful back to back rallies/jalsa in Lahore and Karachi during last year’s fall.
PTI supporters argue that Imran Khan needs technocrat like Asad Umer in his team who has the ability to steward Pakistan out of the financial mess created by current PPP corrupt government. Asad have 27 years of valuable corporate experience working in a highly successful company that he helps grow beyond shareholders expectations. A company that he transform into a mighty conglomerate in short period of five years. He has extraordinary skills and abilities that has successfully diversified a fertilizer company into energy, petrochemicals, chemicals and foods sectors etc. And he is achieved all this success without a smidgen of corruption. He enjoys utmost respect and admiration not only from his colleagues & friends but also from Pakistan corporate sector.
Critics argue that Asad’s decision to join politics by quitting his highly paid job and career for a political party whose future still hangs on uncertainty was bit hasty. But what these critics don’t understand the fact that for someone like Asad Umer who has achieved so much success in his life, money is not the only motivation that inspires him anymore. He has earned a fortune during his career and certainly has invested the same more wisely than our imagination. Maintaining his life style and running his kitchen is the least of his worries. He foresees PTI as an opportunity to rebuild Pakistan.
Pakistani politics need more educated, talented and experience people like Asad Umer, who have an impeccable past and ability to take Pakistan out of this pit of corruption and financial distress. Asad Umer is certainly the inclusion that Imran Khan needed in PTI at the moment.
