Malala Yousafzai: Fatwa against Taliban, too little too late
It took two days for Islamic scholars body ‘Sunni Ittehad Council’ to condemn the brutal attack on school going child activist Malala Yousafzai and issue ‘Fatwa’ (Islamic ruling) against Taliban’s declaring their interpretation of Islam as incorrect, distorted, in contravention of Islamic teachings & interpretation of the Shariah. It is quite surprising to note that after such horrific attack on Malala, Ulema’s (Islamic scholar) Fatwa against Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) took two days to formulate and that is only due to immense public pressure. SHAME on you all!
Ulema’s Fatwa sadly has only come after the country wide condemnation, protest, and public rallies showing support and solidarity with Malala Yousafzai. Malala condition still remains critical after the successful bullet surgery. She was airlifted to Rawalpindi’s AFIC (Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology) from Peshawar for better medical treatment and security. Doctor says that next 10 to 15 days are critical and they are closely monitoring her condition. Government has also said that Malala can be sent abroad for further medical treatment if needed. The general public is unanimous in taking stern action against Taliban and extremism that is ripping apart Pakistan.
The Sunni Ittehad Council that actually represents ‘Barelvi‘ sect of Islam is the only religious body that have condemn attack on Malala Yousafzai and issued Fatwa against Taliban terrorist so far. Other sects have yet to come forward and follow suit. The liberal forces are always critical to Taliban sympathizers who are not only presents in Barelvi, Deobandi, Wahhabi, and Ahl al-Hadith religious bodies, but also well represented in religious political parties like Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) etc. But the attack on innocent Malala Yousafzai have ignited anger against the brutalities & atrocities of Taliban across Pakistan. General public is now raising voice against Taliban brand of distorted version of Shariah & Islam. The Fatwa issued by 50 Islamic scholars may have been too little too late, but it is in the right direction to reinitiate the debate to crash this extremism. It is about time that we all march toward development, prosperity and peace that is in fact the true virtues of Islam
