Banning cellular services & pillion riding is not the solution
Interior Minister Rehman Malik has ordered to block cellular services in Karachi and Quetta from 1pm to midnight. Similar shut down is also planned by the government in other sensitive part of the country during Muharram. Pillion riding is already banned in Karachi and Quetta since first Muharram. Cellular blockage is also planned for 9th and 10th of Muharram. Earlier, such measures have also taken by PPP led collation government on several occasions like Ashura and Eid. They have claimed that it has resulted in saving hundreds of lives. But this claim was proven wrong a today when a suicide bomber blew himself up near Imambargah in Lakki Marwat. Luckily, there were no casualties.
Measures like that shows government lack of strategy for combating growing terrorism and extremism in Pakistan. Banning pillion riding in populated city like Karachi only create problems for thousands of bike commuters. It only benefits ‘Transport Mafia’ who already making millions of rupees on daily basis by running unmaintained, inconvenient, crowded public transport. Lot of office and school going families use motor bikes as their primary mode to transportation. Such blockage create sever problems for them.
Similarly, cellular blockage will not yield any results as terrorist will start using suicide bombers instead of cell phones to detonate their bombs. The cellular blockage paralysis the communication across the city as most of the people has abandon using the landlines. The businesses suffer huge losses due to these cellular blackouts as well. Rehman Malik and government must formulate strategies of combat terrorism and extremism as banning cellular and pillion riding is defiantly not the solutions; it is simply a huge nuisance for millions of people.
